Madou Incense Festival

Madou Incense Festival

In the early 18th century, Lords Lifu, Chifu and Wufu were asked by the citizens of Madou to rid their village of a devastating plague. Since then, the town has hosted a ceremony every year to welcome the Lords into Madou. Arriving at Haipu for the night, Madou worshippers and idols share raucous and cramped quarters – giving the place the nickname ‘Wang Ye Pu’. The next morning, the Five Lords are carried into Madou via Bao An Temple and spend two days circling the town. Afterward, the idols are taken to Bao An Temple, where the faithful gather to worship. The visitation continues through April 25th (on the lunar calendar), when the Lords return to their home temple. The Madou Incense Festival was once a cornerstone of Madou’s religious calendar. However, the festival was discontinued about 1956 and it wasn’t until the Haipu Chiwang Temple was raised in 1987 that the 3rd Lord Wufu was again invited to make his inspection of the town.
